Overview of past projects

In November 2012 we celebrated our 3rd anniversary.

In our first year work focused on preparing Gomde, Lindholme Hall for our first full seminar with Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche. A barn was transformed into our meditation hall, a seminar kitchen created from a store room, a water filtration system was fitted for our well and camping showers and toilets built.

In the following 2 years we added a beautiful oak floor and oak shrine in the meditation hall, completed a prototype retreat hut, created an en-suite room for the resident Lama, added bathrpoom facilities to the attic rooms and created a 3 season patio dinning area which seats 45 people.

In additon, in line with our enviromental aspirations, we added a 9 kwt array of photovoltaic panels to the meditation hall roof and now create much of our own electricity from the sun. The installation also attracts a 20 year grant from the government.

The Quest for 2012- 2013- The Log Gasification System

Keeping warm, working for the environment and sustaining Gomde....
Our environmental goals and Buddhist aspirations require us to protect, enhance and safeguard our rare island habitat of acidic grassland, heath, forest and peat land.

Part of our commitment through Higher Level Stewardship includes the management of the trees on the island. Presently we use harvested wood for our wood-burning stove ~ investigations demonstrate we have sufficient sustainable woodland to meet all our heating and hot water needs.

Coincidentally the government currently offers a Renewable Heat Initiative (RHI) scheme ~ a 20 year agreement paying scheme members for using renewable sources for heating and hot water.
So here are some facts…
Presently we use oil for heating (7-8,000 litres per year), with annual financial costs currently £4,200-£4,800 and far worse enviromental costs.

Our quest is to obtain an 80 KW log gasification boiler with 8,000 litre hot water thermal buffer tank.
This is a large wood-burning stove which stores heat in thermal tanks. It is super efficient and requires burning once per week in summer, and in the coldest winter, once per day. This size installation will attract through RHI, an annual government subsidy of approximately £6,000.
Thus total annual saving/income £10-11,000 ~ over the life of the agreement ~ 20 years inflation linked ~ £200,000-£220,000(!).
Savings such as this will be a major contributing factor to the prosperity and longevity of Gomde UK…

but here’s the rub…
Cost of 80 KW system including the thermal tanks ~ £12,000
Cost of building to house the boiler ~ £10,000
Cost of wood storage building ~ £5,000

Despite the fact that our heating bill is colossal and we can’t actually afford to have it on most of the time (just when you lovely folk come to stay),the log gassification boiler seemed like a very tall order, and a future dream. However after the last retreat Phakchok Rinpoche donated £1,000 for our cause, which was then doubled by one of our Sangha… so we now have £2,000 towards the burner and the dream starts to become reality (well, you know, as ‘real’ as it gets.).
We don’t have to remind you that the first of the Virtuous Deeds and the first Paramita is Generosity. It is also considered most meritorious to be a patron in Buddhism… so imagine if you are a Patron and a Practitioner… most meritorious indeed.

Yuletide is a traditional time for giving in our culture and so we herein make this timely request to raise money for our heat and hot water… if you can give a little, then please give a little… if you can give a lot… then please give a lot!

Medium and longer term goals
As you can see we have many aspirations for Gomde Lindholme Hall, in the future We would hope it would be possible to:

Render and paint the outside walls of the meditation Hall
Repair the coach house to make a well insulated structure with single rooms and residential facilities to accommodate a year round monastic and lay community to live here with a resident lama.
Build a large dining hall with attached commercial kitchen.

To become a reality all these ideas require planning, financing, skill and hard work!
