Lindholme Hall Estate - Information
Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche is ordering for Lindholme Hall a specially gilded statue, a sacred scripture and a stupa. He would also like everyone to know that he will send a special scarf with $10,000. May everyone rejoice! May all beings benefit!
Rangjng Yeshe UK was established in a quiet way, after visits to UK from Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche and Phakchok Rinpoche. Our beginnings were small, with study and meditation groups in the 'south' and 'north'. We hosted twice yearly practice week ends which were blessed with great harmony and a real sense of sangha family. In 2008 we were delighted by the purchase of Hartmuir Hermitage Scotland, a place decicated to retreat which meant that the UK had a 'gomde'- a place of meditators. In July 2009 at Gomde Denmark, the UK sangha formally asked Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche about our future direction and we were surprised and overjoyed when Rinpoche was very positive about the purchase of land in England giving his blessing, saying “now is the time to search and have”. Rinpoche explained that Hartmuir Hermitage would be a “retreat place” and the centre in England a “gathering place”. We left Denmark on 8th July and, as Rinpoche said he would like photos as soon as possible, we started the search upon our return. We imagined that finding easily accessible, remote, beautiful land with a house in England would be extremely difficult. However 12 days later, thanks only to Rinpoche's blessings, we were able to find a truly a wonderful place. As Rinpoche said “I feel it is not possible to find something superior to this place”.
The purchase was agreed on an extremely auspicious day - 22nd July 2009 - the day of the total solar eclipse and a new moon day. Rinpoche said that as the eclipse moves away from the sun there is a special opportunity for reaching accomplishment of practice and Manjushri in particular. Rinpoche added that as the darkness vanishes the light becomes brighter and brighter.
The Lindholme estate is an 'island,' made up of a glacial moraine deposited at the end of the last ice age. The 120 acre site is made up of woodland which includes ancient oak and scots pine believed to originate from colonies dating back to the ice age. The island is surrounded by 3,5000 acres of Hatfield moor, a part of the Humberhead Peatlands National Nature reserve. On the international scale, the moor habitat is as rare as the Amazonian rain forest and considered a very precious part of our national heritage. Most of the nature reserve has protected status both in Britain and Europe, including 'European Special Area of Conservation' and 'Site of Special Scientific Interest'. It is owned by Natural England and the whole area is protected from development. The Lindholme estate is home to a number of rare and endangered species of mammal, bird and invertebrate.
Lindholme Hall is situated in the centre of Lindholme Island, which in itself is in the centre of Hatfield moor. It is therefore very secluded and private with no near neighbours and as the land surrounding the hall is protected there is no local development. The hall is distinguished and beautiful, with a formal garden with mature monkey puzzle trees and views to the south over the estate. There is an orchard and walled vegetable garden. It has seven large rooms downstairs plus a fully fitted kitchen. It has eight large bedrooms on the upper floors. There are numerous outbuildings in various states of repair, including a large coach house, an undeveloped wing to the main house, two large barns, stable blocks and workshops. There is acrcheological evidence of human presence on Lindholme Island which dates back 5000 years. In the 15th century the island was used as a hermitage. And during the reign of Charles I the estate was in the ownership of the royal estate. The seclusion and vastness of the land and the scope of the buildings make Lindholme Hall an perfect place for practice and study of the Buddha Dharma for now and many future generations.
By car the M18 and M180 motorways have junctions which are approximately 5 miles from the Hall. Trains from London take 1hour 40 minutes. Airports: Robin Hood Airport 30 minutes Leeds/Bradford 50 mins Manchester 1 hour 35 minutes Stansted Airport 2 hours 15 minutes Heathrow Airport 3 hours
We would like everyone, wherever they are, to feel included in this project and to rejoice with us all here. Of course as well as great benefits to acquiring precious land there are also some expenses. We hope you can all send your good wishes, which are priceless in making things run smoothly. In addition if anyone has a spare 4x4 vehicle, robust garden tools and machinery to clear and manage overgrown woodland these would be gratefully received! Once we have moved in, we would appreciate offers of practical help for the house and land.
